Chris Rey No Longer Running for Delegate

Due to family issues, Chris V. Rey of Williamsburg will no longer be running for House of Delegates in the 93rd District - the seat currently held by Republican Phil Hamilton. He was an excellent candidate, we were blessed to have him, but we must move on and immediately work on finding another qualified Democrat.

Mr. Rey issued the following press release:

"It has been an honor and pleasure to work as a candidate for the House of Delegates over the last five weeks. The response I have received at the doorsteps in the 93rd district and from donors has been gratifying and humbling. People in our area want change that much is clear.

Unfortunately, I must withdraw as a candidate for the 93rd district. A family situation has arisen that requires my full and undivided attention. I will be the sole guardian of my four-year-old daughter while her mother is away for military maneuvers. When a situation like this arises, political considerations must take a back seat to family life, and I cannot in good conscience attempt to run a campaign under these circumstances.

It has been an honor to have the opportunity to run for this office, and I know and believe that we will have a candidate who will offer the real change and real leadership that our area so desperately needs. Though the time is not right for me, I look forward to supporting that candidate and having a career in public service myself some time down the road. I would like to thank all of my supporters and encourage them to work hard to continue to bring new leadership to the Peninsula."

I think we can all understand this very personal decision. Chris has made a moral choice, and we should all respect him for it.

That having been said - the 93rd is, without doubt, one of the seats Democrats need to pick up if we want to even dream of controlling the House of Delegates. The district went 62% for Barack Obama and has a DPI of 52.3%. We're downright lazy if we allow Phil Hamilton to go unchallenged like he has for over 15 years. So best of luck to Chris Rey with his family, and best of luck to House Caucus and Newport News Democratic Committee finding a new and equally superb candidate (I've gotten to know Chris since he declared - trust me, it's going to be hard to find someone as devoted and whip-smart as him).

What a shame

to lose another good candidate. How many Democrats have backed out this year? It seems that several have done so; is this unusual?
