Former Virgina AG, Mary Sue Terry, is supporting efforts to develop more bench strength for Virginia Democratic female political leaders, through a program dubbed The Farm Team.

Their first major player to take the field will be Jodi Wagner, former Treasurer of Virginia and Secretary of Finance, as a candidate for Lt. Governor in 2009.

Mary Sue and a group of influential women have joined together to encourage and help aspiring Democratic women fulfill their political dreams. The Farm Team has a simple mission:

The goal of The Farm Team is a simple one: recruit, develop and elect women to office. We hope this website will be a resource for women who aspire to hold elective office and for those who wish to support them.

Visit The Farm Team to learn about its origins, other women (and men) who are involved, upcoming regional meetings, and the resources they are bringing to the table. They are not just talk - as Mary Sue says:

This group is not in the business of tilting at windmills.

The Farm Team has picked one statewide candidate, Jody Wagner, as their first and most visible project. Wagner, a former Treasurer of Virginia and Secretary of Finance, is a candidate for Lt. Governor. Mary Sue might have cracked the glass ceiling in 1985, but Wagner would be just the second woman to hold statewide office. The Farm Team is also recruiting and nurturing candidates for school boards, boards of supervisors, and city councils. They are indeed serious about building a strong farm team that will change Virginia politics forever.

Why Jodi?

So I met John Bowerbank during the campaign for Judy Feder here in the 10th. He gave me reasons why he deserves to be the nominee for Lt. Governor, but I am totally undecided.

So I'm asking Jodi's supporters. Why Jodi? My initial impression is that she'd be a good Lt. Governor, but John's running hard for the position and seems to have the early momentum.

I defer...

to others on your good question. I am just the straight up reporter on this one. TP08

Would like a reason

To be honest, I feel like I want to and should be supporting Jodi, just at a first impression. But that's not a reason.

There's something similar with Creigh Deeds going on. I see a lot of "I really like Creigh, but..." Why the "but?"

No Endorsement Has Been Made

This is to clarify that the Farm Team has not made any endorsement in the Lt. Governor's race. Women candidates are welcome to place their information on the Farm Team website, but no one should assume from this that any endorsement has been made by the Farm Team.

My case for Jody Wagner as LG

She is the most qualified and capable candidate. As Treasurer under Mark Warner and then Secretary of Finance under Tim Kaine she was an important part of the team that took Virginia from fiscal crisis, record deficits and partisan gridlock to being named best managed state in the nation twice, the best state for business three times, and the best state for raising children. I also think she would balance the 2009 ticket (Gov, LG, AG) and be the most help in the general election to any of the 3 Democratic gubernatorial candidates.
