Planting the Seeds

Delegate Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) laid the groundwork for the featured speaker, former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry. She explained how at the end of Terry’s unsuccessful campaign in which she had interned, Mary Sue told a gathering of supporters that somewhere in that room, there was the first woman governor.

"Women can disagree, accept defeat, but then pick themselves up and move on, focusing on the future. Men...in the House of Delegates, at least on the Republican side...they get defeated, they disagree, they stew on it, and they look for opportunities to get revenge and public policy doesn’t matter; they will kill a bill because they can because the patron wronged them twenty years ago." -- Delegate Jennifer McClellan

Following a welcome by the Honorable Anne Holton, and introductions by Delegates Kris Amundson (D-County of Fairfax) and McClellan, the first female Attorney General of Virginia noted in an aside how wonderful it was to know that the next Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General had been sitting in the room, attending the Virginia Democratic Women’s Caucus breakfast. She thanked them for supporting this event (in large part the fruit of efforts by Phyllis Ander, a Virginia Beach Democrat, 2nd Vice-Chair of the caucus, and member of The Farm Team).

Farm Team Endorses Wagner

The Mary Sue Terry-led women’s organization announced its endorsement of Jody Wagner in the LG race today. According to their blog, they decided at Monday's statewide meeting to support Wagner. I wasn’t at this meeting and I’m interested from hearing from folks who were because I understand Wagner caused some concern among the membership.

Vote Today in the 46th!

Today is the special election to fill the vacated House seat of Gubernatorial candidate Brian Moran. Voters in the 46th House District (Alexandria) have a chance to elect Charniele Herring to fill that seat, who is running against Republican Joe Murray.

Ms. Herring is a "business owner, political leader, and long-time community activist" as well as a candidate of the new Farm Team, a VA PAC promoting women in VA politics.

Check out the PSA, and her website:

And if you live in the 46th, go vote today!!

Wagner at Fredericksburg Regional Dems Breakfast

Jody Wagner made an impressive debut in the Rappahannock region this morning.

Speaking at the Fredericksburg Regional Democratic Breakfast, Secretary Wagner went over her bio and experience in Virginia politics, and took questions from the group. Members of the Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania committees attended, including former chairs Scott Walker, Tres Seaver, and Alane Callander, as well as newly minted Commonwealth's Attorney LaBravia Jenkins and former Congressional candidate Ted Hontz. Jody said she was relieved to finally be able to campaign, as she didn't want to divert any attention away from Barack Obama in 2008.

Herring Intends to File for Moran's Seat

Update: Another candidate, Ariel Gonzalez, filed November 14th for the primary according to the Virginia Public Access Project. According to the Alexandria Democratic Committee's public calendar, he held a campaign launch December 6th. I assume he was gearing up for the summer primary, but have not found much information other than an e-mail: voteforariel@gmail.com. What do you folks in the 46th know?

Alexandria resident Charniele Herring announced this morning her intentions to run in the 46th. According to a press release issued by Mary Sue Terry's PAC The Farm Team, Herring is a small business owner and has served on various councils, committees, and associations. Here are some of her accolades:

Herring is president of the West End Business Association, a two-time Governor Kaine appointee to the Council on the Status of Women; a member and former chair of Alexandria’s Commission for Women; and member of the Youth Policy Commission. She chairs the Public Policy Committee for Hopkins House (an early childhood education institution), and is on the board of directors for the Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness. She also received the prestigious Monsignor Geno Baroni Award for Social Justice. As a participant with Social Action Linking Together (S.A.L.T.), she worked to expand funding for the Homeless Intervention Act, which became a state-wide program.

My thoughts on the political ramifications below the fold.

The Farm Team Fields a Major Player - Jodi Wagner for Lt Gov

Former Virgina AG, Mary Sue Terry, is supporting efforts to develop more bench strength for Virginia Democratic female political leaders, through a program dubbed The Farm Team.

Their first major player to take the field will be Jodi Wagner, former Treasurer of Virginia and Secretary of Finance, as a candidate for Lt. Governor in 2009.
