Martin Luther King Jr.

Honoring MLK Jr Day in Va Senate - Deeds Speech

From Deeds for Virginia Press Release:

RICHMOND - 1/19/09 - Senator R. Creigh Deeds today delivered the following remarks on the floor of the Virginia Senate in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

We can honor Dr. King's legacy by ensuring there is equality in economic funding, that every region of this commonwealth gets its fair share of funds to help create jobs, build schools and provide better health care to all people.
For in truth, it is our common dream. And here in what was the capital of the confederacy we can use the strength of our diversity to dream of a better life for ourselves, our families and our children.

Creigh Deeds' MLK floor speech today; tone deaf to his own hypocrisy

I received an email today from Sen. Creigh Deeds in his campaign for Virginia's governor. Maybe you did too. As one might expect on this special day when we honor Martin Luther King, Jr., Sen. Deeds cast his comments about Virginia's future in light of the great man's dreams.

Together we have come so far, but we have so far to go on our journey to achieve true economic justice, to break the bonds of discrimination once and for all, and to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed in life.

The Dream at a White Church

A really cool thing happened at my church the other night. I decided to hold off on writing about it until today, given the holiday we celebrate today and the president we swear in tomorrow. Thursday evening, there was a gathering at First Baptist Church of Martinsville in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Our pastor, Dennis Knight, coordinated and co-hosted the event with Rev. Tyler Millner of Morning Star Holy Church in Axton.
